I am a UK Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney and Unified Patent Court (UPC) Representative with fifteen years' experience in the profession. Before founding RIDAN IP, my career spanned both private practice and senior in-house roles at Dyson.

Engineer and patent attorney

I trained and worked as a mechanical engineer before entering the patent profession. I hold an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham. My five-year MEng course included a year in industry at Cummins in Daventry.

My doctoral research on engine combustion and emissions was supported by Jaguar Land Rover and Shell Global Solutions. I also gained hands-on automotive engineering experience at MAHLE Powertrain (formerly Cosworth Technology), working on engine development and the calibration of high-performance road vehicles.

During my PhD, I received the Austin Rover Prize (2011) for my thesis and the Hufton Scholarship (2012) for outstanding academic performance.

That engineering foundation continues to shape my approach to patent work: understand the technology first, identify what matters technically and commercially, and develop the IP strategy around it.

Private-practice expertise. In-house perspective.

My private-practice career gave me broad experience advising individual inventors, growing technology businesses and multinational organisations across patent drafting and prosecution, oppositions, freedom to operate, registered designs and wider IP matters.

I then spent over three years as an in-house patent attorney at Dyson, advising across a range of product categories and technologies. Working closely with engineers and senior stakeholders gave me first-hand experience of intellectual property as part of the product-development process: identifying and protecting innovation, assessing patent risk, supporting design-arounds and making practical decisions about where IP investment adds value.

That combination of engineering, private-practice and in-house experience now informs the way I advise RIDAN IP clients: patent advice should work for the business, not simply produce more patents.

Clients work directly with me, from the initial discussion and strategy through to delivery of the work. RIDAN IP focuses on engineering and physical products, including mechanical and electromechanical technologies. Support covers patents, registered designs, freedom-to-operate and product-clearance advice, trade secrets and IP strategy.

For businesses needing continuity across product and portfolio decisions, I also provide fractional in-house patent counsel alongside founders, leadership and technical teams.
