Ritchie Daniel is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney and UPC Representative with fifteen years' experience in the patent profession, an MEng and PhD in Mechanical Engineering, and earlier hands-on automotive engineering experience.
Before entering the patent profession, Ritchie worked on the calibration of high-performance road cars and the development of heavy-duty diesel engines. His patent career has since combined private-practice work with more than three years in-house at Dyson, advising engineers and business leaders on innovation, patent protection, freedom to operate and portfolio strategy.
His work spans original patent drafting, UK and European prosecution, global filing strategy, freedom-to-operate analysis, validity and infringement work, EPO oppositions, registered designs and portfolio development. In a mechanical invention, the useful patentable idea may lie in the relationship between components rather than in any one part. Geometry, movement, force paths, fluid flow, thermal behaviour, materials, manufacturing constraints and control can all affect how the invention should be described and claimed.
